Lewis County Rural Electric Cooperative

Service Area:

Lewis County's service area consists of 2,340 miles of energized line servicing approximately 7,000 meters. Lewis County employs 25. The area covers part of 7 counties: Lewis, Clark, Shelby, Knox, Adair, Scotland , Marion, and the towns of  Novelty, Arbela, Granger, Monticello, Maywood, Durham and Medill..

Board of Directors:

The service area is divided into three districts, each represented by three board members who serve a three year term. The board is a governing body of the Cooperatives. Acting as a group, they establish the policies by which the Cooperative is operated, review all activities of the Cooperative, attend training courses and other Cooperative program-related meetings in order to carry out their duties and responsibilities as directors.

Member Services:

Loan Program: Members who meet the requirements of the loan program will be eligible for a $3,000 loan for use in the installation of Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems and Dual-Fuel Heating and Cooling Systems. Loan is to be repaid over a period of 84 months at 5% interest.

The loan program has certain requirements that must be met. If you have any questions, please call the office for Travis L. Mathes at 888-454-4485.

Rebate Programs:

Geothermal Rebate: If you install a ground source heating/cooling system that meets our efficiency requirements, we will reimburse you $250 for every ton installed.  The geothermal heat pump is a relatively new technology. The unit not only heats and cools your home, but heats most of the hot water you use. It is the most efficient heating and cooling source on the market.

Duel-Fuel Rebate: This is a heating and cooling system which joins a high efficiency air source heat pump with a fossil fuel furnace (gas, oil). The heat pump heats your house most of the time. When the outside temperature drops below 25 degrees, the gas furnace automatically kicks in. The advantage is that you pay less for heat when the heat pump is running and you, additionally, have central air. The rebate for adding on an air source heat pump is $200 per ton.

Water Heater Rebate: For a new home, extensive remodeling, or if you are replacing a gas water heater, we will give a $200.00 rebate. If you are replacing an existing electric water heater, we will give you a $100.00 rebate. Only 40 gallon or larger water heaters qualify for the rebates.

Each of these programs have certain requirements that must be met. If you have any questions, please call the office for  Travis L. Mathes at 888-454-4485.

Geothermal Heat Pumps:Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) systems are among the most economical and environmentally friendly ways to heat and cool. They use the earth's relatively constant soil temperature to provide year-round efficient comfort conditioning. Advantages such as lower operating and maintenance costs, durability, and energy conservation make Geothermal Heat Pumps the smart choice.

How They Work: Below the frost line the temperature of the earth is fairly constant. GHP systems take advantage of this to provide efficient, year-round comfort conditioning and essentially free domestic hot water. The system does not operate by heating or cooling air with fuel, but instead moves heat from the ground to the building or vice versa. This innovative approach taps an inexhaustible source of energy, making GHP's a better alternative than burning scarce, nonrenewable fossil fuels. GHP's fall into two broad categories; Closed and Open-Loop Systems. Closed-Loop Systems circulate water or an environmentally safe antifreeze solution through plastic pipes buried beneath the earth's surface. The fluid absorbs heat from the earth and transfers it to the building in the winter, then reverses to draw heat from the building and returns it to the ground in the summer. Open-Loop Systems operate on the same principle and can be installed where an adequate supply of suitable water is available and open discharge is feasible. The plastic pipe used for the heat exchanger loop can be installed three ways: Horizontally, vertically, or in a pond or lake. The available land area and the soil and rock type at the site will help determine the most economical choice.

Advantages of GHP's

  • Low Operating Cost: GHP's reduce heating and cooling costs and provide domestic water heating essentially free or at substantial savings.
  • Low Maintenance Costs: GHP's have fewer mechanical components, making them more reliable, easier to service and less prone to failure. The ground heat exchanger and its associated piping has an expected life of over 50 years.
  • Reduction in Rooftop Repairs: GHP's eliminate the need for rooftop equipment. Schools will no longer be limited to flat roofs, and the need for roof repairs will be decreased.
  • Durability: GHP's last much longer than conventional HVAC systems because they are protected from harsh outdoor weather.
  • Low Noise: GHP Systems are among the quietest ever designed.
  • Reduced Emissions: GHP's do not require external venting, as fossil fuel systems do, so they do not pollute the air.

Capital Credits:

Members share in the margins remaining at the end of the year, called "Capital Credits". After all expenses for providing electric energy have been satisfied, money left over is assigned to members in the form of a "Capital Credit Allocation". The allocation provides operating capital for the Cooperative. The Board of Directors determines the time and amount of any capital credit retirements.
